The 10th annual Beaker Street Festival begins today, with more than 70 events scheduled across Tasmania from August 6 to 17. According to a statement from the Premier of Tasmania, the science and arts festival will feature a “Hobartica Precinct” on the Hobart waterfront, celebrating the city’s connection to Antarctica with immersive experiences and performances. Events are planned for locations including the Styx Valley, Triabunna, Burnie, and Launceston.
A new container refund point for the Recycle Rewards scheme has opened in Cambridge, reports Mirage News. The new depot is the 49th refund point to open in the state, providing a location for residents on the Eastern Shore to return eligible containers for a 10-cent refund.
Pulse Tasmania reports that today marks one year since the disappearance of pilot Gregory Vaughan, 72, and his partner Kim Worner, 66. The Deloraine couple vanished on a flight in their two-seater aircraft after taking off from George Town airport on August 2, 2025, bound for New South Wales. An extensive air and sea search involving Tasmania Police and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority found no trace of the plane or its occupants.
In arts news, the full program for the Junction Arts Festival in Launceston has been released, according to Pulse Tasmania. The festival, now in its 16th year, will run from September 17 to 20. The program includes plans to convert a Baptist church into a nightclub and cabaret venue and will feature a festival hub with live music in Prince’s Square.
