A 20-year-old Bridgewater man has been charged with a series of offences, including causing significant damage to the Tynwald Park oval in New Norfolk, Tasmania Police said in a statement.
The man was arrested in Gagebrook on Tuesday, 23 June, by detectives from the Bridgewater CIB. According to the police media release, specialist resources were involved in taking the man into custody.
He was remanded to appear in court on Wednesday, 24 June.
Police allege the man is responsible for the damage at Tynwald Park, which occurred over the weekend. The vandalism forced the New Norfolk Junior Football Club to cancel Sunday’s games and move training sessions to another venue.
In addition to the property damage charge, police have charged the man with a wide range of other serious offences. Tasmania Police allege these relate to burglaries and motor vehicle thefts in Bridgewater, Glenorchy, and the wider southeast region.
The extensive list of charges includes one count of aggravated burglary, four counts of burglary, six counts of stealing, and three counts of motor vehicle stealing, police said. He has also been charged with one count of attempted motor vehicle stealing, two counts of evading police under aggravated circumstances, and 23 counts of breaching bail conditions. Further charges include three counts of operating a vehicle with unnecessary speed or loss of traction.
It is a requirement of the law that any person charged with an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
