Kingborough Council has announced the completion of the Browns Road Reconstruction Project in Kingston, a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving safety and accessibility.
The project, which was the second stage of upgrades to the road, focused on a 400-metre section between the Channel Highway intersection and the Australia Post Depot. In a statement, Kingborough Council said the works delivered a full reconstruction and sealing of the road surface, new kerbs and gutters, and upgraded drainage.
Pedestrian access was also a key component of the project, with a new concrete footpath replacing the previous asphalt path. Kingborough Council also noted the project addressed safety issues at the Browns Road and Channel Highway intersection, improving the corner radius and installing protective barriers.
The works, which began earlier in the year, were conducted in multiple phases and required significant traffic changes. In a March 2026 announcement, then-Mayor Paula Wriedt noted that construction would require making a section of Browns Road one-way uphill and temporarily closing the southbound Kingston slip lane on the Southern Outlet. The state government’s Department of State Growth also detailed disruptions to bus services throughout the construction period.
In an April 2026 update, the council stated that underground stormwater upgrades had been completed, with work focusing on the new footpath, retaining walls, and intersection realignment.
The completion of the project was announced by Acting Mayor Christian Street. Councillor Street became Acting Mayor in May 2026 following the resignation of Paula Wriedt.
The first stage of the Browns Road upgrade, which improved the section closest to the Southern Outlet, was completed in 2022, according to Kingborough Council.
