Clarence City Council is encouraging its residents to join the Garage Sale Trail 2026, marking the final iteration of Australia’s biggest secondhand treasure hunt. The popular community event, focused on decluttering and promoting reuse, will take place across two weekends: November 7-8 and November 14-15, 2026.
The Garage Sale Trail provides a free platform for individuals, households, community groups, and even entire streets to host garage sales or local markets. Participants can register their sales at no cost, receiving a listing on the national map, which is viewed by hundreds of thousands of people in the lead-up to the event. This initiative aims to make selling pre-loved items straightforward and rewarding, with organisers providing tips, how-to guides, and promotional materials to assist sellers.
For those looking to declutter their homes, the event offers a prime opportunity to turn unwanted items into cash. In 2025, household sellers participating in the Garage Sale Trail earned an average of $761, while community groups raised over $1,325. Beyond the financial benefits, the event strongly promotes environmental sustainability by extending the life of items and diverting them from landfill. Each year, hundreds of thousands of items are collectively saved from ending up as waste through the trail.
Shoppers, or “treasure hunters,” can also get involved by exploring the numerous sales across the Eastern Shore and wider Tasmania. The national map allows bargain hunters to plan their routes and discover unique finds, from vintage fashion and furniture to books, toys, and collectibles. The event fosters community connection, bringing neighbours together whether they are selling or searching for a bargain.
Clarence City Council is one of over 120 councils nationwide supporting the Garage Sale Trail in 2026, making it free for residents to participate. This widespread council support underscores the event’s significant role in local waste reduction efforts and community engagement across Australia.
This year’s event, dubbed “The Last Hurrah,” marks the final time the Garage Sale Trail will be held after 16 years of promoting secondhand culture. Organisers have indicated that while the Garage Sale Trail is concluding, their focus will shift to a sister initiative, Grow It Local, which also champions community action and environmental sustainability.
Clarence residents interested in hosting a sale or finding out more about the Garage Sale Trail 2026 are encouraged to visit the Clarence City Council website or the official Garage Sale Trail website for registration and further details.
