Police are investigating a serious crash that occurred on Kennedy Drive at Cambridge this afternoon, leaving a male cyclist in critical condition. The incident, involving a white Mazda and a cyclist, prompted an emergency response around 12:10 pm on Wednesday, 23 September 2026.

A/Inspector Rob Bessell, from Southern Road Policing, confirmed that emergency services were called to the scene shortly after midday. The cyclist, a man aged in his 50s, was transported by ambulance to the Royal Hobart Hospital for urgent medical treatment. He is currently reported to be in a critical condition, having sustained head and neck injuries. A/Inspector Bessell noted that the cyclist was wearing a helmet, which he stated played a significant role in his survival.

The driver of the white Mazda, a woman in her 70s, stopped at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with police investigations. She was not physically injured in the incident.

Kennedy Drive was closed for approximately two hours to allow crash investigators to thoroughly examine the scene and conduct their inquiries. Traffic was diverted via Bungana Way during this period, and Tasmania Police extended their thanks to motorists for their patience and understanding.

While investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, A/Inspector Bessell highlighted the vulnerability of cyclists on the roads, reminding all road users of their shared responsibility in ensuring safety. Police believe the Mazda was travelling towards Hobart and turning into the airport area, while the cyclist was riding towards Sorell at the time of the collision. At this stage, there is no indication that speed or inattentiveness were factors in the crash, but the circumstances are still being determined.
