A driver in Sandford is facing significant penalties, including a six-month vehicle clamping and a four-month licence disqualification, after Tasmania Police reported they were detected speeding 75 km/h above the posted limit. The incident, which occurred on Monday, September 14, saw a green Holden Commodore allegedly travelling at 155 km/h in an 80 km/h zone in the Sandford area.
According to Tasmania Police, officers from Southern District Support Services were conducting mobile patrols when they detected the vehicle. Following a safe interception, the driver is to receive a fine of $1224.75 and six demerit points, in addition to the vehicle clamping and licence disqualification.
Acting Sergeant Joshua McCarthy of Tasmania Police expressed disappointment regarding the incident. “Excess speed is a major contributor to serious and fatal crashes and police are disappointed that some members of the community continue to put themselves, and others, at risk with unsafe driving,” Acting Sergeant McCarthy said.
Tasmania Police consistently urges motorists to adhere to speed limits and drive safely to prevent serious and fatal crashes on the state’s roads. The penalties imposed in this case underscore the serious consequences for drivers who significantly exceed speed limits.
It is important to note that any person charged with an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
