Four men have been issued infringement notices following a joint operation by Tasmania Police and the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) targeting illegal wood cutting in a North-West reserve this week. The operation, which took place on Monday, August 10, saw the men intercepted within a reserve in the Claude Road, Gowrie Park area.
The individuals, residents of Devonport and East Devonport, are aged 37, 33, 31, and 24. Each man received an on-the-spot fine of $852 for illegally cutting wood. Additionally, two of the men were issued further infringement notices, each incurring an extra $410 fine for driving a motor vehicle within the reserve.
Senior Sergeant Martin Parker of the Latrobe Police Station stated that police have received numerous reports of illegal wood cutting. He urged community members to exercise vigilance and to only purchase firewood from reputable sellers.
Senior Sergeant Parker emphasised that the cutting of firewood from reserves without a permit is illegal. He confirmed that Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, in conjunction with Tasmania Police, will continue to conduct operations to apprehend those responsible for such offences. Offenders risk significant fines and the potential seizure of their chainsaws and associated equipment.
The Senior Sergeant also reminded the public that cutting firewood from private property without the owner’s permission, or from land owned by Sustainable Timber Tasmania, is also illegal. Individuals found committing these offences may face charges and court proceedings.
