Kingborough Council is set to host a free community event at the recently completed Dru Point basketball court in Margate this Friday, October 9, offering a range of activities for young people and families during the school holidays. The event, scheduled from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, aims to foster connection, participation, and overall wellbeing within the community.
Acting Mayor Christian Street highlighted the event’s significance, noting it has been made possible through a Mental Health Week grant. “This free event will be a great opportunity for young people to get active, meet new people and enjoy a positive day out in the community,” Cr Street said. He emphasised that looking after wellbeing often involves simple actions like spending time with friends, being active, sharing a meal, or trying something new, all of which will be brought together at Dru Point.
The event coincides with Mental Health Week, which runs from October 3 to 11, and aligns with its 2026 theme, “Appreciate the Little Things.” Attendees can look forward to a variety of engaging activities designed to embody this theme. These include basketball games and skill sessions led by coaches from the Kingborough-Huon Kings, as well as boxing skills sessions provided by PCYC.
For those interested in creative pursuits, circus activities will be on offer with the Sands family, alongside tote bag painting and hair feather stations. A free barbecue will be available for all attendees, and the Appelflap Café will also be on site, providing healthy treats.
Cr Street underscored the Council’s commitment to community wellbeing. “Creating opportunities for people to come together and enjoy positive experiences is an important part of supporting community wellbeing,” he stated. The event is supported by a Tasmanian Government Mental Health Week Grant.
Families and young people are encouraged to attend and take advantage of the new facilities at Dru Point. While registration is available online via the Kingborough Council website, attendees are also welcome to simply turn up on the day.
