Hobart’s central business district was the scene of another significant traffic operation this morning, Thursday, August 13, 2026, where Tasmania Police detected 50 offences in a concentrated effort to improve road safety. The operation, conducted by Southern Road Policing Services, focused on dangerous driving behaviours that continue to pose risks to all road users.

This latest blitz follows a similar operation held just a week prior, which saw 40 traffic offences recorded in the Hobart CBD within a one-hour period. The concerning increase in detected infringements highlights an ongoing issue with driver compliance in the city centre.

During today’s operation, police identified 10 drivers illegally using mobile phones while behind the wheel. A further 40 drivers were caught committing yellow or red-light offences, indicating a disregard for crucial traffic signals at busy intersections.

Sergeant Andy McShane of Southern Road Policing Services expressed disappointment with the results. “Today’s results show too many drivers are still choosing to ignore the rules that are designed to keep everyone safe,” Sergeant McShane said. He emphasised the severe consequences of such actions, stating, “These offences create a real risk of serious crashes, particularly at busy city intersections where there are high volumes of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists”.

Sergeant McShane reiterated that there is “no excuse for using a mobile phone while driving or failing to stop safely at traffic signals,” describing these as “deliberate decisions that place other road users at risk”. The police message to motorists remains straightforward: “put your phone away, pay attention to the road and obey traffic signals every time you get behind the wheel”.

Tasmania Police also reminded drivers of their obligation to stop at a yellow traffic light if it is safe to do so before the stop line or intersection. Distractions, such as mobile phone use, are known to significantly increase the likelihood of crashes, while failing to adhere to traffic signals can lead to devastating outcomes for everyone on the road.
