Tasmania Police have launched a Professional Standards investigation following the death of a 23-year-old New Norfolk man in custody at the Hobart Reception Centre on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The man was found unresponsive in his cell by prison staff around 11 am. Despite immediate attempts to resuscitate him, the man could not be revived.
Assistant Commissioner Doug Oosterloo confirmed that the deceased was a person of interest in an ongoing Claremont wounding investigation. Police had arrested the man in New Norfolk on Saturday afternoon, August 15, in connection with an incident that occurred in Claremont on Friday. He was initially taken to the Hobart Police Station before being transferred to the Hobart Reception Centre at approximately 5:30 pm on Saturday.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unknown at this stage, and the cause has not been released. A report will be prepared for the Coroner, which is standard procedure for all deaths in custody. The Coroner will independently investigate the full circumstances of the death.
