Kingborough Council’s Turf Maintenance Team has initiated its yearly spring maintenance program across the region’s recreation grounds, as winter concludes and warmer weather promotes new growth. The program aims to restore surface quality, encourage healthy grass growth, and ensure safe playing conditions for users ahead of the busy summer sports season, Kingborough Council announced.
Acting Mayor Christian Street highlighted the importance of these works, stating that “Spring is a busy time for turf maintenance and helps ensure our sporting grounds are in the best possible condition for the months ahead”. The comprehensive program follows the conclusion of the winter football and soccer seasons, addressing the wear and tear on local ovals.
Crews are currently undertaking aeration works, a crucial step to relieve soil compaction. This process involves coring or spiking the surface, which improves the movement of air, water, and nutrients through the soil profile, thereby creating space for roots to grow and enhancing overall turf health, Kingborough Council explained.
Following aeration, a top dressing of sand will be applied. This application is designed to further improve drainage, support seed germination, and contribute to a more even playing surface, according to the Council. Acting Mayor Street emphasised that by carrying out this maintenance now, the Council is helping to ensure sporting grounds remain safe and ready for the summer sports season.
The spring turf maintenance program will be implemented at various sports grounds throughout Kingborough. Locations include Taroona, Kingston, Kingston Beach, Blackmans Bay, Margate, Snug, Sandfly, Kettering, Woodbridge, and Bruny Island.
Kingborough Council has requested the community’s patience while these essential works are underway. Residents and sporting groups are encouraged to observe any temporary closures and signage at the affected grounds. For those seeking updates on the maintenance status of specific sports grounds, information is available on Council’s dedicated sports grounds webpage, Kingborough Council advised.
