Kingborough Council has announced it will hold an information session for community members interested in becoming a councillor. The session is for prospective candidates in the Tasmanian local government elections scheduled for October 2026.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 22 July, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Kingborough Council Civic Centre on 15 Channel Highway in Kingston.
According to the council’s announcement, the session is an opportunity for interested locals to learn about the functions of the council and the responsibilities of elected members. Attendees will hear from council CEO, Dave Stewart, the Executive Leadership Team, and a representative from the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT). Topics will include an overview of how the council operates, the duties and obligations of councillors, and the decision-making process.
The Tasmanian Electoral Commission will conduct the statewide council elections in October by postal ballot. Voting in local government elections is compulsory for all electors on the state roll. These elections will decide the makeup of all 29 local councils across Tasmania, with successful candidates serving a four-year term.
Kingborough Council’s current CEO, Dave Stewart, was appointed to the role in early 2024. The council serves an area of approximately 720 square kilometres and a population of just over 40,000 people.
The information session is free to attend, and the council has requested that those wishing to go should register via a form on its website.
