Kingborough Council has announced it will host a unique “Pop-Up Café: Discover Neil the Seal!” event on Friday, 11 September 2026, offering local seniors an opportunity to learn more about the beloved marine visitor. The event, part of the Council’s Positive Ageing Program in partnership with its Youth Program, aims to blend education with community connection.
The café will be held at the Kingborough Community Hub, located at 7 Goshawk Way, Kingston, from 11:40 am to 1:00 pm. Attendees can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and light refreshments, prepared by young baristas-in-training, before a presentation by special guest speaker Dr. Sophia Volzke from the University of Tasmania.
Dr. Volzke is set to share the “fascinating story” of Neil, the southern elephant seal who has garnered significant attention across Tasmania and internationally due to his distinctive personality and frequent visits to the state’s shores. Her talk will cover Neil’s backstory, the reasons behind his repeated returns, the scientific explanations for his memorable antics, and guidance on how the community can safely coexist with wild marine animals. The session will also include time for questions and conversation.
Neil, born in Salem Bay in 2020, first gained widespread fame in July 2022 after spending a month-long moulting period in Hobart, where his comfort around humans and playful interactions with traffic cones attracted significant public interest. Since then, the now five-year-old southern elephant seal has become a local icon, known for his appearances on roads, beaches, and even residential lawns, sometimes causing minor disruptions like flattening street signs or fences. His antics have frequently gone viral online, making him one of Tasmania’s most recognised wildlife personalities.
Southern elephant seals are a threatened species in Australia, and Neil’s unusual behaviour, including his comfort in human environments, is believed to stem from an early rescue and an inexperienced mother. Authorities, including the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) Tasmania, have consistently advised the public to maintain a safe distance from Neil for both his welfare and public safety.
The Kingborough Council’s Pop-Up Café is specifically for Kingborough residents aged 60 and over. The cost to attend is $5, which includes refreshments. Bookings are essential due to limited places.
