Kingborough Council has scheduled a series of upgrades to public toilets and community facilities to improve accessibility across the municipality. The projects are detailed in council planning documents outlining capital works priorities.
According to Kingborough Council’s five-year capital works program, new disability-accessible toilets are planned for the Blackmans Bay Community Hall and the Kettering Community Hall, with each project budgeted at $150,000. A similar upgrade is slated for the Kingston Beach Oval Clubroom, with an allocated cost of $88,000.
The council has also allocated $30,000 for a new disability ramp at the Margate Community Hall. In addition to these upgrades, the works program lists the demolition of the toilet block at the Woodbridge Community Hall, a project budgeted at $90,000.
These specific projects fall under the council’s broader Public Toilet Strategy, which aims to provide a safe, accessible, and high-quality network of public facilities. A council strategy document noted that many existing public toilets were not designed for disability access and that significant refurbishments or replacements are needed in the coming years.
The planned works are part of a budget that also includes significant investment in digital transformation to modernise how the public interacts with the council, Kingborough Council announced in a release on its 2026/27 budget. In a statement on the budget, Acting Mayor Christian Street said the council had to take a “disciplined approach” in response to rising costs for labour and materials.
The focus on public facilities comes after recent community attention on the issue, with Kingborough Council agreeing in early June 2026 to open the main toilets at Kingston Beach an hour earlier each day following complaints from the public, as reported by Pulse Tasmania.
