Kingborough Council has announced the return of Tasmania’s “most generous market,” the Really Really Free Market, scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026. The community event, where everything is offered and received completely free of charge, will take place at the Kingborough Community Hub, located at 7 Goshawk Way in Kingston.

Running from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm, the market encourages residents to participate in a unique sharing economy. The initiative is built on the principle of giving, aiming to foster community spirit through the exchange of resources, promoting reuse, and reducing waste.

Attendees are encouraged to bring good quality, reusable items they no longer need, such as books, CDs, toys, clothes, excess produce, plant cuttings, and seeds. Beyond physical goods, the market also provides a platform for sharing skills, with past offerings including massage, poetry writing, singing, and repair services.

The Council highlights that the market serves as a practical demonstration of sustainable living, reducing consumption, and preventing usable items from ending up in landfill. By facilitating the passing on of unwanted treasures, the event creates a “win/win solution” for household clutter and environmental responsibility, according to Kingborough Council.

For those wishing to contribute by setting up a stall, Kingborough Council provides a 2m x 2m space, complete with a trestle table and chair. Participants are reminded that any items not given away by the end of the market must be taken home or donated elsewhere. The Council also reserves the right to refuse sites for items deemed inappropriate.

In line with community wellbeing, the Council advises that anyone experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms should stay home. For those sharing food, strict hygiene practices are requested, including washing hands, using clean preparation areas, and serving food with gloved hands or utensils.

The Really Really Free Market is a recurring event, typically held four times a year, and is a key part of Kingborough’s community engagement and waste reduction efforts.
