A man and a woman have been charged after a disturbance in central Hobart on Sunday afternoon that resulted in a man being stabbed.
In a statement on Monday, Tasmania Police confirmed a 41-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were charged with wounding following the incident. Both individuals were granted bail and are scheduled to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on October 5.
The charges relate to an altercation that occurred just after 3 pm on Sunday, 21 June, on Elizabeth Street near the intersection of Patrick Street. Several local outlets reported the incident took place outside the Salvation Army building.
According to the initial Tasmania Police media release, officers were called to a report of a group of people, who were known to each other, involved in a fight. During the altercation, one man sustained two stab wounds to his upper body, police said. A second man was struck on the head.
Both men were transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries. Two other men involved in the incident were treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to the police statement.
Tasmania Police have stated that all individuals involved in the disturbance were known to one another. A police statement noted, “it is believed the altercation was linked to an ongoing dispute between them”.
Following the incident on Sunday, police took two people into custody and asked the public to avoid the area while they conducted their investigations. Police also appealed for anyone who witnessed the event or who might have dashcam footage to contact them on 131 444 or to provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
