A 31-year-old man has been charged by Tasmania Police after he was allegedly caught driving in Cambridge last night with a breath analysis reading more than five times the legal alcohol limit. Officers from Southern Road Policing responded to reports from concerned community members about 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, regarding a man allegedly driving dangerously.
Police allege the man was detained at Cambridge Park around 7:24 pm, where he subsequently returned a breath analysis reading of 0.267. The legal blood alcohol limit for drivers in Tasmania is 0.05.
The man has been charged with exceeding the prescribed alcohol limit. As a result of the alleged offence, he was immediately disqualified from driving for two years and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Sergeant Terry McCullough from Southern Road Policing emphasised the seriousness of the alleged incident. “This level of offending shows a blatant disregard for the safety of other road users and emergency responders,” Sergeant McCullough said. He further stated that police would continue to take strong action against individuals who jeopardise public safety by targeting drink and drug driving.
Sergeant McCullough also extended gratitude to the community members who reported the dangerous driving. “We’d like to thank the members of the public for reporting the matter and preventing a potentially tragic incident,” he added.
Tasmania Police reminds the public that a person charged with an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
