A man has been taken into custody by Tasmania Police following an aggravated carjacking that occurred on Main Road, Moonah, earlier this evening, Tuesday, 1 September 2026. The incident unfolded around 6:25 pm when a man returning to his vehicle was allegedly threatened by another man, who was believed to be armed with a knife.
Tasmania Police reported that the alleged offender then stole the victim’s silver Toyota Camry. The vehicle was last seen heading towards Creek Road, Moonah, immediately after the incident.
Police units quickly responded to the report, initiating a pursuit that involved the deployment of road spikes. The stolen Camry was successfully intercepted and came to a stop in Pierce Street, Moonah. Following the vehicle’s immobilisation, the driver allegedly fled the scene on foot.
A subsequent search of the area by police led to the successful location and apprehension of the alleged offender. He was taken into custody approximately an hour and twenty minutes after the initial report, around 7:45 pm.
Tasmania Police are appealing to the public for further assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the silver Toyota Camry in the Moonah area around the time of the incident, or who possesses any information relating to the carjacking, is urged to contact Crime Stoppers. When providing information, the police have requested that the reference number OR815375 be quoted.
As the matter is now subject to police investigation, further details are expected to be released as they become available. A person charged with an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
