Tasmania Police have seized a motorbike and questioned a 36-year-old Summerhill man as part of an ongoing investigation into a serious evade incident that occurred in Prospect on Saturday, August 15. Charges are currently being considered in relation to the incident.

According to Tasmania Police, road policing officers were attending another incident on the Bass Highway in Prospect around 10pm on August 15 when a motorcycle approached their location at speed. The rider reportedly slowed and briefly stopped before accelerating directly towards the officers. During this manoeuvre, a side mirror on the motorcycle struck several officers, causing it to break off, before the rider fled the scene without stopping for police.

Fortunately, the officers involved were not physically injured during the incident, though Commander Marco Ghedini noted that the outcome “could have been very different.”

Following extensive enquiries, investigators located and seized the unregistered motorcycle from an address in Summerhill on Tuesday, August 18. A subsequent search of the property by police uncovered a backpack containing a motorcycle helmet, a replica firearm, and a quantity of illicit substances.

Commander Ghedini condemned the actions of the rider, describing the event as a “serious incident” and an “unacceptable, deliberate act” that put the safety of officers at significant risk. He reiterated that such “idiotic and reckless actions” would not be tolerated, emphasising that police officers have the right to perform their duties safely.

Commander Ghedini also extended his gratitude to the investigating officers, expressing confidence that their work would lead to further results and charges against the person responsible.
