A raft of Tasmanian Government changes and initiatives are set to begin today, July 1, marking the start of the new financial year with new systems for planning, health communication, and the public service.
The Tasmanian Planning Commission has announced that the new Tasmanian Planning Policies (TPPs) officially commence today. The commission published an information sheet to guide councils and planners on the new processes, which will affect current and future planning assessments across the state. The TPPs are designed to create a consistent strategic framework for land use and development throughout Tasmania.
In a move to combat scams, the Department of Health will now use “TASHEALTH” as its single, official SMS sender ID for all text message communications. The department stated this change is part of a national register run by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to help people verify that messages are genuine. While the sender name will be standardised, individual messages will still identify the specific service, such as an outpatient clinic confirming an appointment.
Today also marks the start of a voluntary redundancy program for eligible employees in the Tasmanian State Service. The Tasmanian Government announced the expression of interest process targets up to 500 positions in non-frontline and corporate roles for exits between July 1 and December 31, 2026. Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the program is part of the government’s commitment to reduce the size of the State Service in a “careful and considered way” while protecting frontline service delivery. The government noted that not all applications for redundancy may be accepted, as they will be assessed against agency operational needs.
These changes coincide with the beginning of the 2026-27 financial year, a time when many new government policies and fiscal adjustments are traditionally implemented. The value for penalty units, which are used to calculate fines for many offences, are also typically updated from July 1 and published in the Government Gazette, according to the Department of Justice.
