Kingborough Council has announced the opening of a new temporary modular pump track at Kingston Park, providing a new recreational opportunity for riders of all ages and skill levels. The facility, located near the open space at Kingston Park, close to the intersection of Goshawk Way and the Huon Highway, is now ready for community use, just in time for the school holidays.
The modular pump track offers a dynamic and challenging riding experience, encouraging outdoor activity and skill development. A pump track is designed to be ridden by generating speed through body movements, known as “pumping,” rather than pedalling. Riders use their weight and momentum over rollers and berms to maintain speed, making it an engaging workout and a fun activity for bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and roller skates.
Kingborough Council confirmed that the installation of this temporary track is part of a broader strategy while the Kingborough Mountain Bike Park undergoes reconstruction as part of the Kingborough Sports Precinct project. This interim facility ensures that the community continues to have access to riding amenities during the larger development.
Students from Calvin Christian School were among the first to test the new track. Tim Wherrett, a Teacher of Outdoor Education and Experiential Learning at the school, noted that the track’s tighter layout presents a more challenging experience, demanding quicker timing and technique from riders. Despite the increased difficulty for beginners, Mr Wherrett observed significant progress in balance and comfort among his students, who left with a strong sense of achievement.
Once the new Kingborough Mountain Bike Park and its permanent asphalt pump track are completed, the temporary modular track will be relocated to another area within Kingborough. This plan aims to further expand riding facilities across the municipality, creating additional opportunities for community recreation.
For those new to pump tracks or younger riders, Kingborough Council advises that an existing beginner pump track remains open nearby, adjacent to the Kingston Park open space. This ensures that options are available for all levels of experience, from those just starting out to more advanced riders looking for a challenge.
