Tasmania Police are investigating the suspected theft of eight cattle from a farm in the St Marys area between January and June this year.
In a statement released on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, police said a local landholder had recently reported the animals missing from their paddocks on three separate occasions. The total value of the missing livestock is estimated to be about $17,000.
Police detailed the three incidents they are investigating. The first reported loss was an Angus steer, which is believed to have been stolen sometime between 6 January and 15 January. In a second incident, two Angus heifers reportedly went missing between 22 January and 3 February. The third and largest incident involved five in-calf Angus cows, believed to have been stolen between 20 April and 8 June.
According to the police statement, all the missing cattle are black. They are identifiable by a yellow ear tag bearing the name “Killymoon” and individual details, as well as a white National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) ear tag.
Investigators are asking for public assistance and have urged anyone who may have seen cattle matching this description to come forward. Police are also interested in any reports of suspicious activity along Harefield Road in St Marys, including unfamiliar vehicles, stock trucks, or unusual livestock movements.
Tasmania Police reminded the community that rural properties can be targeted by offenders due to their isolation and large size, which can mean stock are not checked routinely. They advised that maintaining regular contact with neighbours and reporting unusual occurrences can play a key role in preventing rural crime.
