A 56-year-old Sandford man has had his firearms licence suspended after the alleged discovery of a rifle fitted with a silencer at his property.
In a media release, Tasmania Police stated the weapon was seized following a search of the man’s property in the Sandford area in late 2025. The search was conducted by wildlife rangers from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, with assistance from Tasmania Police.
Following the seizure, the man’s firearms licence was suspended, and all firearms registered to him were seized by authorities, according to the police statement.
Tasmania Police said the man, who was a licensed firearms holder, will be proceeded against by summons for alleged firearm offences.
Under Tasmanian law, it is an offence to possess or use a firearm sound suppressor, also known as a silencer, without specific authority. The Firearms Act 1996 also classifies any firearm fitted with a suppressor as a prohibited firearm.
Police have not specified a court date. It is a requirement of law that any person charged with an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
