Kingborough Council has announced the completion of a comprehensive refresh of the Snug River Track, a popular coastal walking route in the region. The upgrades aim to enhance the experience for both local residents and visitors, making the scenic riverside walk even more accessible and enjoyable.

Acting Mayor Christian Street invited the community to explore the newly improved track, which stretches from the Channel Highway entry through to Snug Oval and Snug Beach. The track follows the clear waters of the Snug River, leading walkers to the footbridge at the river mouth.

The refreshed track offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in the stunning natural surrounds of the area, learn about local history, and observe the positive impact of Landcare plantings, which are actively helping to protect the riverbank from erosion, Kingborough Council stated.

The Snug River Track is a 2.4-kilometre return journey, typically taking approximately 40 minutes to complete. It is suitable for bikes, with Council advising cyclists to slow down and alert other users when passing. Dogs are also welcome on the track, provided they are kept on leads.

Connectivity has been a key focus of the upgrade, with the track now linking to Pothana Road and the Snug to Margate Shared Path. This integration further connects the Snug River Track into Kingborough’s wider network of walking and cycling routes, promoting active transport and outdoor recreation across the municipality.

At the conclusion of the walk, visitors can find the 1967 Bushfire Memorial, where interpretive signs share the poignant story of the devastating bushfires that impacted the region and the remarkable community spirit that emerged in their aftermath.

For those planning a visit, parking is available at Snug Beach near the NWB Sea Scouts Hall, although parking at the Channel Highway entrance is limited, according to Kingborough Council. Council also advises users to take care along the Esplanade and be mindful of oysters at the river mouth, as their sharp shells can pose a hazard to kayaks and swimmers.
