Local residents and small businesses across Kingborough and other Southern Tasmanian municipalities can now access free, independent advice to help reduce their energy bills and improve year-round comfort in their homes. The “ZapCat Supporting Residents – Informed Energy Choices” initiative was launched on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, by Kingborough Council in collaboration with Hobart City Council, Huon Valley Council, and Brighton Council.

ZapCat, a certified social enterprise, provides practical and tailored guidance on a range of clean energy and energy efficiency upgrades. This includes advice on installing solar panels and batteries, electric vehicle charging, induction and electric cooktops, hot water heat pumps, reverse cycle air conditioning, insulation, and draught proofing.

The program aims to empower residents to make informed choices that can lead to significant financial savings and a more comfortable living environment. Australian Government data indicates that the average household could save over $1,000 annually by transitioning to electric hot water, appliances, and heating and cooling systems. These savings could increase to approximately $4,300 per year for households that also incorporate an electric vehicle, solar panels, and a home battery.

Beyond financial benefits, the initiative also highlights potential health improvements. Replacing wood and gas heaters, along with other gas appliances, can enhance indoor air quality. Research suggests that gas cooktops are linked to around 12 per cent of childhood asthma cases.

Kingborough Acting Mayor Christian Street emphasised the importance of the initiative, stating that it will support residents in making their homes more comfortable and resilient against extreme heat and cold. “It’s important that people can be safe and comfortable during increasing heat in their homes as our climate changes. This program provides practical, independent advice to help households make informed energy choices,” Acting Mayor Street said.

ZapCat’s expert advisors are available to help households and businesses compare various product options, estimate upfront costs and long-term savings, and connect them with quality, vetted local installers. Crucially, ZapCat operates independently, ensuring that no commissions or lead fees are charged to installers, and all advice remains unbiased. Support is also specifically available for renters and those seeking simple, low-cost options to reduce energy use and lower power bills.

Residents and small businesses in the participating council areas can access this free service by visiting the ZapCat website at www.zapcat.com.au/southern-tasmania. The platform offers an instant online estimate for potential costs, savings, and available rebates, or the option to book a free virtual consultation with an expert advisor.
