Tasmania Police’s Firearms Services have seized a total of 21 firearms from a 67-year-old Northern Midlands man today, Friday, 28 August 2026, following a routine inspection of his residence.
During the random inspection, police identified several alleged breaches of firearms legislation. These included firearms and ammunition being stored together, the absence of a functioning electronic security device, the alleged possession of two silencers (sound suppressors), and the alleged possession of an unregistered firearm.
As a direct result of the alleged offences and concerns identified during the inspection, police seized all 21 firearms from the licence holder. Tasmania Police said the man will be proceeded against by way of summons for the alleged offences. Additionally, Firearms Services will review his ongoing suitability to hold a firearms licence.
Tasmania Police emphasised that firearms licence holders have a responsibility to ensure their firearms are stored and secured in accordance with legislative requirements. A key requirement for licence holders who possess 10 or more firearms is maintaining a functioning electronic security device. These security measures are designed to protect firearms from theft, unauthorised access, and misuse within the community.
Tasmania Police stated they would continue to conduct regular inspections across the state to ensure firearms are stored safely and securely, and that licence holders meet their legislative obligations.
