Two people have died following a two-vehicle collision at Old Beach earlier today. Tasmania Police confirmed in a media release that two people, who were the occupants of a Holden Barina hatchback, died at the scene.
The crash occurred shortly before noon on Tuesday, 23 June, on the East Derwent Highway near Cassidys Road, as reported by Pulse Tasmania and confirmed by police. The collision involved the Holden Barina and a Mitsubishi Triton utility.
According to a police statement, the driver of the utility was not physically injured in the crash.
Emergency services attended the scene, and the East Derwent Highway was closed for several hours into the evening while Crash Investigation Services and Forensics officers examined the area. Tasmania Police have stated that a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
This incident marks the third fatal crash on Tasmanian roads since last Friday, according to police. On 19 June, a 52-year-old George Town woman died in a two-vehicle crash at Hillwood, and on 22 June, a man in his 60s died in hospital following a crash at Carrick. The state’s road toll for 2026 now stands at 16, which Tasmania Police noted is lower than the 25 fatalities recorded at the same time last year.
Police have asked for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage of the Old Beach crash to contact them on 131 444 or to report information anonymously to Crime Stoppers Tasmania.
